Arild Andersen has been one of the leading bass players in Europe for more than 30 years, starting as a member of Jan Garbarek Quartet (67-73) together with Terje Rypdal and Jon Christensen. At that time Arild also worked with Karin Krog, and with people like Phil Woods, Dexter Gordon, Hamton Hawes, Johnny Griffin, Sonny Rollins, Chick Corea, Don Cherry and George Russel. Arild Andersen is a legend in Norwegian and international jazz.

ARILD ANDERSEN TRIO w/Tommy Smith & Paolo Vinaccia

“With enough form to lend cohesive shape to the entire set and plenty of freedom to allow Andersen, Smith and Vinaccia to take the music where they will.”

John Kelman – All About Jazz

One of the most interesting and unusual jazz trios to have emerged in the last ten years is the international collaboration between Norwegian master bassist Arild Andersen, Scottish saxophonist Tommy Smith and Italian percussionist Paolo Vinaccia.

Andersen formed the trio in 2007 with the clear aim of breaking new ground in contemporary jazz and their impact was immediate. Their group’s initial live performances were noted for their astonishing power, precision and dynamism.

Much of that energy was captured on the Live at Bellville CD, released in 2008 on ECM to widespread critical acclaim. Additionally in that same year, Andersen was awarded the prestigious Grand Prix du Musicien Européen de l’Académie du Jazz in France for this recording.

Since then, Andersen, Smith and Vinaccia have toured regularly and consolidated their worldwide reputation as a compelling live act. The trio have travelled widely and won the appreciation of discerning jazz audiences as far afield the USA, Japan, Scandinavia, Europe, UK, Nicaragua, Argentina, India, Guatemala, South Korea and Egypt.

In 2014, they released Mira, their delightful second recording for ECM. The album attracted universally enthusiastic reviews and became instantly popular with jazz radio broadcasters. Andersen conceived Mira as a Sunday morning album and it’s appeal lies as much in its startling contrast to Live at Bellevilleas its devotion to shimmering melody.

ARILD ANDERSEN TRIO w/Tommy Smith & Paolo Vinaccia will be touring throughout 2018 with new music and a new album that embraces imaginative creativity and contributes to the evolution of stunning, surprising contemporary jazz.

ARILD ANDERSEN TRIO - IN-HOUSE SCIENCE

Norwegian master bassist Arild Andersen’s trio with big-toned tenorist Tommy Smith and powerhouse drummer Paolo Vinaccia is one of the most viscerally exciting jazz small groups of the present moment. Its energies are arguably best captured in a live context, and here the three musicians deliver a characteristically smoking performance at the Villa Rothstein in Bad Ischl, Austria, recorded in September 2016. Their earlier concert recording "Live At Belleville", was issued a decade ago to rave reviews and a shower of awards. “Absolutely and unreservedly marvellous” said the BBC Music Magazine. “How often do just three musicians produce music as vast and panoramic in its scale and vision?” asked Jazzwise, amazed.

ARILD ANDERSEN / PAOLO VINACCIA /TOMMY SMITH - MIRA

DAGSAVISEN mer

The debut of Arild Andersen's now longstanding trio with Scottish saxophonist Tommy Smith and Italian expat drummer Paolo Vinaccia on Live at Belleville (ECM, 2008) came as no small surprise, even to those familiar with the Norwegian bassist's work on the label—dating right back to its inception on Jan Garbarek's classic Afric Pepperbird (ECM, 1971), as well as with his own fine triptych of more accessible early albums, recently collected on Green Into Blue—Early Quartets (ECM, 2010).
Andersen has proven, over a career now spanning six decades, to be a bassist with a muscular tone and broad stylistic reach: from the freer terrain of Tryptikon (ECM, 1973), with Garbarek and Finnish drummer Edward Vesala; through his fusion of jazz modality and the Norwegian folk tradition on Sagn (ECM, 1993); to the remarkably focused, spontaneous compositions of Karta (ECM, 2000), a trio date with German trumpeter Markus Stockhausen and French percussionist Patrice Héral augmented, for this session, by Andersen's partner in ECM's original Nordic "Big Five," guitarist Terje Rypdal. Still, few could have expected the absolute heat that permeated Live at Belleville, an early document of a trio that, six years later, has further evolved both its language and chemistry. ARILD ANDERSEN TRIO - LIVE AT BELLEVILLE

Live recording of Arild Andersen’s exciting new trio, playing in Oslo’s Belleville club and at the Drammen Theatre, spurred on by an enthusiastic crowd. Apart from Duke Ellington’s “Prelude To A Kiss”, played with much feeling by Tommy Smith, the music is all written by Andersen, and it burns. “Live At Belleville” may be Arild’s most powerful trio recording since “Triptykon” with Garbarek and Vesala, back in 1972. Recorded September 2007.

From Andersen, Smith and Vinaccia we can expect a concert in intense interaction with Andersen's unmistakably; rich bass tone in the center of it all. Tommy Smith contributes with lyrical perfection and on drums Paolo Vinaccia is complementing the sound with his creativity.

(b.1954) PAOLA VINACCIA is an Italian drummer, percussionist and composer who has worked with Arild Andersen for many years on a wide range of projects. He has lived in Norway since 1979 where he has been extremely active within the domestic jazz community. He has also worked extensively throughout the wider European jazz scene in a variety of partnerships and musical alliances.

He is particularly in demand as a pivotal improviser and a profoundly original percussionist. His career as sideman involves far too many individuals to name here, but they include exceptional work with Nils Petter Molvær, Ketil Bjørnstad, Bugge Wesseltoft, Bendik Hofseth, Mike Mainieri and many others. In 2006 he was commissioned by Canal Street Jazz Festival to produce the original work Landkjenning with Terje Rypdal.

Paolo Vinaccia’s recorded output is remarkable. It is to be found largely on defining contributions to countless albums, sessions and record dates, ostensibly led by others. He can be heard on over one hundred recordings that range from jazz and world music to rock and pop.

This remarkable discography constitutes an enviable body of work that carries the indefinable stamp of Vinaccia’s extraordinary ingenuity. In 2010, he underscored his reputation as a musician who makes the difference by releasing the six-disc retrospective box set Very Much Alive featuring, among dozens of others, Terje Rypdal, Palle Mikkelborg and Ståle Storløkken

(b.1967) TOMMY SMITH is one of the finest saxophonists of his generation and founder/director of the respected Scottish National Jazz Orchestra (SNJO). He is an international recording artist, a composer and arranger of extraordinary ambition, and a leading jazz educator.

His prolific career began in earnest when, aged only sixteen, he recorded his first album Giant Strides. He was rewarded with a scholarship to Berklee College of Music, an experience that has shaped his affirmative approach to jazz. Since then, he has made twenty-six solo albums as a leader for Blue NoteLinn and his own label Spartacus Records.

Smith has also worked with a multitude of much-admired jazz figures on numerous collaborations. They include Gary Burton, Chick Corea, Jack DeJohnette, Kenny Barron, John Scofield, Jaco Pastorius and Trilok Gurtu to name just a few. His tenure with the SNJO has seen critically acclaimed performances and recordings of programmed and commissioned works including hugely popular treatments of Ellington, Gershwin, Weather Report and Miles Davis.

Tommy Smith is Head of Jazz at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland. He also holds three honorary doctorates from Heriot-Watt, Glasgow Caledonian & Edinburgh Universities and a Professorship from the RCS. His album Karma won him his seventh Scottish Jazz Award for album of the year in 2012.

ARILD ANDERSEN SOLO

In his solo concerts he uses his electronics close in relationship with the core of jazz, improvisation. Nothing is pre-recorded.Sometimes it sounds like a whole string orchestra. Sometimes just a spacey background for his solo playing.Even with electronics, the most significant in his solo concerts is the beauty of the sound of his acoustic bass. Arild Andersen’s solo concerts includes music from Ornette Coleman to Paul Simon, Norwegian folk music and of course his own compositions.

ARILD ANDERSEN QUINTET

Arild; The quintet started out as an idea to connect the musicians I've been working with the last 10 years. It comes from three trios:

Carsten Dahl, Patrice Heral, Arild Andersen
Markus Stockhausen,Patrice Heral, Arild Andersen
Arild Andersen,Tommy Smith, Paolo Vinaccia

Patrice has also subbed for Paolo in my trio several times. This is all some of my favorite musicians  and from this I wanted to form a New Quintet. Marcin Wasilewski, who I worked with this winter came in on piano. I did not work with a Jazz Quintet  like this since my band “ Masqualero” 1982-92. The quintet started with a concert at Kongsberg Jazzfestival 2011

The quintet is now:

Arild Andersen (Norway) bass
Patrice Heral (France) drums
Marcin Wasilewski (Poland) piano
Tommy Smith (Scotland) ,saxophone
Markus Stockhausen (Germany), trumpet

These are all very busy musicians so there will be some alterations now and then.
-The music we play is my compositions  picked from recordings like «Electra» , «Hyperborean» , » Sagn » ,» Aero«,» The Triangle«  and new material will be added as we go.
