Starting out as a Hank Marvin-influenced rock guitarist with The Vanguards, Rypdal turned towards jazz in 1968 and joined Jan Garbarek's group and later George Russell's sextet and orchestra. An important step towards international attention was his participation in the free jazz festival in Baden-Baden, Germany in 1969, where he was part of a band led by Lester Bowie. During his musical studies at Oslo university and conservatory, he led the orchestra of the Norwegian version of the musical Hair. He has often recorded with ECM, both jazz-oriented material and classical compositions (some of which don't feature Rypdal's guitar). Today, Rypdal is an important member of the Norwegian jazz community. His collaborations as guitarist and composer with other ECM artists Ketil Bjornstad and David Darling in 90s are also noteworthy. In those compositions he found a way out of jazz and classical compositions to a modern and more avant-garde unique style.

Musically conspiracy at the highest level.

"Music is conspiracy. The secrets we exchange - when it is at its best, there are no words," is Terje Rypdals own words about his new band. The guitar giant who since the 60s has paved the way for a completely separate way of expressing guitar, music and composition , turns 70 in 2017. Terje Rypdal Conspiracy is by no means an isolated commemorative project.

"In my mind I started this band a long time ago," reveals Rypdal and tells enthusiastically about the desire to play with a bassist again. The cooperation with Elephant9 has been and still is fruitful, "so we are already tight," says Rypdal on bassist Nicolai Eilertsen, "and Ståle Storløkken I have played with virtually since kindergarden!". Then Rypdal recalls an audio recording of a concert in Copenhagen in '81, with a drumming he never had heard before. It was Palle Mikkelborg, Sveinung Hovensjø - and Pål Thowsen on drums. "He is the musician in Norway that plays as Tony Williams," says Rypdal

The music Terje Rypdal Conspiracy presents will be composed of older material, mainly from the Chasers- and Odyssey period, in addition to some new material. They will perform the songs they rarely played live, and new versions of the songs that have been played. "It's an incredibly tight band. It's like Chasers at its most powerful," says Rypdal himself. The band will eventually do a recording for ECM. "It's the start of a new era for me", says Rypdal.

TERJE RYPDAL - MELODIC WARRIOR

Some albums are worth the wait, even if that wait is a full decade. The lion's share of guitarist Terje Rypdal's Melodic Warrior is devoted to the nine-movement title suite, a 2003 recording with the Bruckner Orchester Linz and, most importantly, the Hilliard Ensemble, the vocal ensemble that leapt to greater fame with Officium (ECM, 1993), the first of three recordings with Rypdal's fellow countryman, Norwegian saxophonist Jan Garbarek. The four-movement "And the Sky was Coloured with Waterfalls and Angels," from a 2009 performance with the Wroclaw Philharmonic Orchestra at Poland's renowned Jazztopad Festival, rounds out the record, a series of tone poem studies in contrast.

In a career documented exclusively on ECM since Terje Rypdal (1971), the guitarist has divided his time between improv-heavy (but still structure-based) concerns like 1975's Odyssey—reissued, finally in its entirety, in the 2012 Odyssey: In Studio & In Concert box—and an interest in classical composition that began with Rypdal's introduction to the music of György Ligeti, through the soundtrack to Stanley Kubrick's 2001: A Space Odyssey (1968). Best-known, perhaps, for "jazz" recordings more predicated on an instantly recognizable tone and approach to electric guitar, Rypdal's reputation as a classical composer remains of no small significance—and despite working as a composer alone on recordings like 1990's Undisonus, Rypdal has also found ways to integrate his soaring six strings into the mix. TERJE RYPDAL - ODYSSEY IN STUDIO & IN CONCERT

Norwegian guitarist Terje Rypdal played piano, sax, flute and trumpet as a child – early tone-colour insights that probably laid the foundations for an electric guitar sound somewhere between a flute, a violin and Jimi Hendrix. Aged 28, Rypdal (who played on Jan Garbarek's early albums and was one of the first long-term recruits to the ECM label) formed his Odyssey quintet in 1975, and part of this three-disc set is the band's debut studio album – a mix of dreamy sustain-pedal sounds, orchestral string-synth effects, and bursts of percussion-heavy rocking. The other two CDs (featuring previously unreleased material with Swedish Radio's big band in 1976) represent the beginnings of the guitarist's career as a composer. The pop-song structure of Better Off Without You, represent a very different Rypdal, and the guitarist's nine-part Unfinished Highballs suite is a kaleidoscope of ghostly woodwind scoring and church-organ sounds. It's an intriguing extra chapter to the Rypdal story. THE GUARDIAN

TERJE RYPDALS ”CRIME SCENE” w/ BERGEN BIG BAND

An exciting departure for ECM veteran Rypdal, this extended work, commissioned for the 2009 Bergen Festival, begins with a sound of swirling massed horns likely to bring Coltrane to mind. There is more than a hint of “Ascension” in the opening moments of “Crime Scene”, a work paced like a mystery thriller. The music surrounds the Rypdal quartet with Mikkelborg, Storløkken and Vinaccia (all of whom recently appeared on the critically-acclaimed “Vossabrygg”) with a 17-piece jazz big band and keeps the action moving at a fast pace.

Terje Rypdal’s opus list is vast, and he has often worked with large instrumental forces, but collaborations with jazz big bands have been infrequent. Invited to write music for the Bergen Big Band he was intrigued by the fact that they had recently issued an album of variations on John Coltrane’s “Meditations” (Grappa Records, 2007), a very progressive choice for jazz big band. Late period Coltrane had been one of Rypdal’s entry points into jazz improvising in the 1960s, so he was pleased to extend this influence in his writing for the Bergen ensemble. “They are,” he observes, “a rather special big band.” Apart from the skills of the individual members, Terje was delighted to find that the line-up of the 17 piece big band included three musicians playing bass clarinet: great news for a composer who loves to work with sound texture.

A small Rypdal group – his partners Ståle Storløkken and Paolo Vinaccia from the Skywards trio plus old comrade Palle Mikkelborg – are flanked by the massed Bergen players, conducted by Olav Dale, in a quasi concerto grosso format, a band inside a bigger band. There is passionate playing both at the centre and on the edges of the music and periodic bursts of flat-out rock jamming by Rypdal and his team, including incendiary exchanges between Terje and Storløkken, the latter perhaps best known for his contributions to noise/electro/improv band Supersilent. When the smoke clears, Mikkelborg and Rypdal evoke the spatial/textural skyscapes of their early collaborations (“Waves”, “Descendre”); a good deal of Rypdal’s musical history is referenced here.

ALL ABOUT JAZZ CRIMESCENE REVIEW

TERJE RYPDAL / KETIL BJØRNSTAD DUO

Ketil Bjørnstad and Terje Rypdal have played together in diverse constellations since 1992. Cranked-amp electric guitar and acoustic piano is a rare, possibly unique, duo combination and ”Life in Leizig” is an exciting live CD, readily accessible, strongly melodic, often rocking album, -recorded in Leipzig's Opera House.

Februar 2008 kom konsertalbumet ”Life in Leipzig” på ECM. Platen har fått gode anmeldelser i Europa. Her blir det garantert lekent og flott samspill mellom to gode venner på samme musikalske reise.

MELODIC WARRIOR  / THE HILLIARD ENSEMBLE

«Melodic Warrior» - the title is hardly accidental. Rypdal takes no hostages in his battles against the contemporary ugliness in music, defending its contemporary beauty in the process. The 45-minutes symphonic epos was commissioned by The Hilliard Ensemble, and Rypdal wrote it with a set of North American Indian poems in mind. The work was premiered by Rypdal and The Hilliards in Linz 2003, and has later been performed at Norwegian music festivals in Stavanger and Harstad, on every occasions with a different symphony orchestra taking part. A Norwegian critic once described «Melodic Warrior» as «unclean» music, certain to provoke some listeners, delight others – a token of quality as good as any. The term «unclean» refers to Rypdal’s unashamed mixing of musical genre –  he draws from orchestral, contemporary-sounding passages as well as heavy symph-rock, offers bars of Broadway-type musical-melody and hints of hollywoodian filmmusic. On top of it all reigns the vocal art of The Hilliard Ensemble, in itself a travel through time from the Renessance to the present – Rypdal in short serves himself from – and offers the listener – the whole smorgasbord. He does it in style, with his characteristic guitarsound as sculptured and telling as ever, and he shows his confidence by making one of the world’s top vocal quartets sing Jimi Hendrix’ famous «Purple Haze»-line: «’xcuse me while I kiss the sky» for in the next moment to explode in a long guitarsolo with a full symphony orchestra backing him as were it a monster-powertrio. Sure, it is a work that breaks a few rules, but then again, what are such musical rules for, if not to be challenged and broken by melodic warriors? Personnel; Terje Rypdal guitar, The Hilliard Ensemble voices together with  “local ” Symphony Orchestra.
