Svante Henryson is a unique musician. A virtuoso of three instruments, a composer of orchestral music, and an improviser fluent in all musical languages, he moves boundlessly across the entire musical spectrum. As a cellist, performing in jazz, world music or rock, he makes the cello sound as if it always belonged there. Be it in a raga duo with Indian guitarist Vishwa Mohan Bhatt, with a jazz big band, or in front of a symphony orchestra, the voice of his cello is instantly recognizable. Photo Credit: Mats Bäcker

Svante Henryson grew up in Umeå in northern Sweden, playing at the local jazz clubs as a fourteen-year-old bass player. As a double bassist, still in his teens and halfway through music college, he became a member of the Oslo Philharmonic Orchestra. Soon after making his debut as a soloist with the orchestra he became its Principal Double Bassist. Svante was also the Principal Bass of the Norwegian Chamber Orchestra led by Iona Brown. Following that was a three-year stint as a bass guitarist with rock guitar legend Yngwie Malmsteen. Stevie Wonder is also on the list of previous encounters of his Fender bass. As a cellist, Svante Henryson has developed a unique style, taking the instrument to where it has never been before musically.

As a composer, his list of works includes two concertos for cello and one for the electric bass guitar, as well as symphonic, choral, chamber, and jazz music. Noted performers of his chamber works include Anne-Sofie von Otter, Elvis Costello, Martin Fröst and Roland Pöntinen. As an improviser, Svante belongs to the top layer of modern Scandinavian jazz musicians, working with Steve Gadd, Jon Balke, Terje Rypdal, Wolfgang Muthspiel, Wayne Krantz and Arve Henriksen to name a few.

The latest release is "Night Song" on ECM Records, a duo album with pianist Ketil Bjørnstad.

Nordisk råds musikkpris til Svante Henryson
Den svenske cellisten, bassisten og komponisten Svante Henryson mottok Nordisk råds musikkpris 2015 under Nordisk råds prisutdeling i Reykjavík. MER

"In general the mood of the music is reflective, sombre even, with the rich, dark melancholy ring of Henryson’s cello the perfect foil for Bjornstad’s economic and thoughtful piano work. The cellist doesn’t just use the bow, there are several instances throughout the suite of Henryson plucking the strings in the manner of a jazz bassist, a technique that features particularly strongly on his own compositions such as “Reticence” and “Melting Ice”.

Henryson/Balke/Jormin/Kleive Quartet

A band  made  up of  four  Scandinavian jazz  stars  –  Svante  Henryson  (cello),  Jon  Balke  (piano), Anders Jormin (double bass)  and Audun Kleive (drums) – some of the most influential musicians in the last twenty years of European  jazz.

The  project,  which  began  with  the  first  edition  of   Jon
Balke’s Magnetic North Orchestra, was born thanks  to the open musical vision of  its leader Svante
Henryson and  has  its  roots  in  the  constant desire  of  its other  members  to  explore  and  interact.
Henryson is a unique musician when it comes to voice  and phrasing, an all-around artist able  to
move  with absolute  freedom in a  musical  universe without distinction of musical genre.  He is a
composer  for  orchestra and a formidable improviser, equally comfortable playing  double bass  and
electric bass  as well as being a virtuoso on the cello.

Henryson’s career spans through a wide array
of  genres  and  collaborations,  from  the  Oslo  Philharmonic,  to  being  a  member  of   Yngwie
Malmsteen’s  legendary rock band, passing  through prestigious  collaborations (with Anne-Sofie von
Otter, Elvis Costello etc.) and being  an integral player on the Scandinavian Jazz  scene. His quartet
has  an  unmistakable  sound:  four  masters  on  their  respective  instruments  light  up  the  original
compositions of their leader  with an almost magnetic synergy, under the common denominator  of
jazz, but always on the lookout for new ideas and surprises.

“Closing with a bang (…) with Svante Super 4, a quartet that calls into play some of the best elements of Scandinavian jazz. Collaborating with this talented cellist is his countryman Anders Jormin on double bass as well as Norwegians Jon Balke on piano and Audun Kleive on drums. One might say a smaller version of the original Magnetic North Orchestra (http://italia.allaboutjazz.com)

The leader’s beautiful compositions range from chamber music to European-style Jazz. Kleive, who some time ago started working with Balke and the Jøkleba trio again, is rooted and masterfully in tune with the pianist and bassist, as Svante leads  the band’s direction with fervor. This is only the second show for this extraordinary quartet and it is to be hoped that they will soon be releasing an album.Luca Vitali AllAboutJazzItalia
