Andersen / Tsabropoulos / MarshallThis trio, formed by the two "veterans" Arild Andersen and John Marshall together with Vassilis Tsabroupoulos (born 1966) made its debut album "Achirana" on ECM. Tsabropoulos has a reputation as a classical pianist, especially focusing on Beethoven, Mozart, Chopin and Schuman, but has also frequently been playing the works of Rachmaniov, Prokofiev and Scriabin. He is composing for piano, violin, string quartet among others. Among his current projects are classical performances, conducting and recording in addition to jazz... Andersen met Tsabropoulos when playing together with Markus tockhausen in Greece. He says about Tsabropoulos "What struck me straight away was the fact that his execptional classical technique never got in the way of his jazz feeling. This is very unusual. And I liked very much the fact that his improvising is generally not chordally based. He's more often playing independent lines in the left hand.". While both touring with electronic composer Vangelis Katsoulis in Greece, Andersen and Tsabropoulos got to know each other better. Andersen (born 1945) is among the great contemporary bass players. He has been playing together with Jan Garbarek, Terje Rypdal, George Russel, Karin Krog, Don Cherry, Phil Woods, Hampton Hawes, Johnny Griffin, Art Farmer and many more. After some years in New York in the early seventies, he returned to Norway and set up his own bands. In recent years he have been exploring Norwegian folk music together with singer Kirsten Bråthen Berg, digging into string together with the Cikada String Quartet and collaborated with German trumpeter Markus Stockhausen. The last member of the trio is the british drummer John Marshall (born 1941). He has been playing with artists like Alexis Korner's Blues Incorporated, the Joe Harriott-John Mayer IndoJazz Fusion group, the Graham Bond Organisation, John McLaughlin, Dave Holland, John Surman, Alan Skidmore, Gil Evans, Mary Lou Williams, Ben Webster, Roy Eldrige, Milt Jackson, Charlie Mariano and many more. Marshall has also been working with classical and modern music. Musicians
